Kayak Instruction Course

Looking to improve your core kayaking skills?
Want to take your river kayaking to the next level?
Then this kayaking instruction course is for you!

Whether you’re preparing for your Grade 2 Certification, or you’re just looking to sharpen your core kayaking skills this course is ideal! It is a 2 day kayaking course for those wanting to start their pathway into paddling grade 2 rivers. The course is designed to provide basic paddling skills to enable the candidate to safely manoeuvre through grade 2 rapids. White water kayaks will be used for this course.

WHITE WATER TRAINING TOPICS:
SOFT SKILLS:

  • Reading the river and River Hydrology
  • Identify river hazards
  • Manage hazards and Personal Safety
  • Risk Assessment

HARD SKILLS:

  • Flat water paddling skills
  • River running
  • Ferry gliding across the flow and eddy turns
  • Moving down water on grade 1 & 2 rapids
  • Self – rescue and water confidence

In addition to being confident swimmers, candidates must have a good level of health & fitness. It is important that students can understand instruction, therefore a good level of English is also required

COURSE STRUCTURE

Please note that times and locations may vary due to river flows
PRE COURSE (7PM - 9PM)
19:00 - Meet and greet at Wanaka Pool & Recreation centre
19:30 - Intro to kayak equipment and gear up for the weekend
20:00 - Wet exits and water confidence (in water session)
20:45 - Plan for the weekend
21:00 - Finish

What to Bring

- Kayak gear you will use for the weekend*
- Change of clothes
- Swimwear and top/shorts for in the water

DAY ONE:

08:00 - Meet at the Clutha Outlet. Gear up and plan for the day
08:30 - Flat water paddle and introduction of strokes
10:30 - Morning Break
11:00 - Flat water paddle and introduction of edges
12:30 - Lunch
13:00 - On land theory discussion on river features and river skills
14:00 - Moving water session - putting theory into practice
16:00 - Rescues in moving water
17:00 - Debrief, questions and Day 2 plans
18:00 - Finish
What to bring

- Kayak gear (see equipment list)
- Change of clothes
- Tupperware lunch (for on the move)

DAY TWO:

08:00 - Meet at Camp Hill ( Hawea White Water wave). Gear up.
08:30 - Moving water session developing skills from Day 1
10:30 - Morning tea
11am - Continue moving water session in grade 2 rapids
12:30 - Individual debriefs at take out and tips for future paddling
13:30 - Team wrap up
14:00 - Finish
What to bring:

- Kayak gear (see equipment list)

- Light snack for on water

- Warm clothing (no cotton or denim - thermals are good)
- Swimwear and top/shorts for in the water
- Towel
- Lunch
