The Lake Escape starts with you meeting one of our guides, either at the Wanaka I-site or right at your accommodation door. From there you’ll head down to the lake, where your stand up paddle board journey begins!
From the waterfront, you’ll be geared up and you'll receive instructions on the basics while still in the shelter of Roy’s Bay. Then, depending on the lake conditions, your guide will have you either do the short paddle over to the marina to get picked up by the water taxi, or have you start your SUP journey out of town!
If you take the water taxi first, you’ll have a sweet scenic ride. You'll be dropped off in an out-of-town location to begin your journey back into Wanaka. If you begin from the waterfront, you’ll paddle out of town, looking towards Mt. Aspiring Park the whole time. You will be picked up at the end of your adventure for a water-taxi ride back into Wanaka. Along the way, your guide will give you helpful tips and tricks to improve your SUP game, and share some inside knowledge about the history and environment that shaped Lake Wanaka.
Between paddling and your water taxi ride, you will also stop someplace scenic and have a picnic with light beverages and our famous brownie!
You’ll finish your tour in town, which means it’s a short trip back to your pick up point, where you’ll bid a tearful farewell to your awesome guide.
Cancellation: Customers may cancel or rebook without penalty up to 24 hours prior to trip departure. Cancellations or no-shows after this time will be charged full price.
What should I wear?
You will want to wear swimwear or something that you don’t mind getting wet. Jeans or anything cotton is not great. If it is cold we will give you a wetsuit and splash jacket to wear over your swimwear.
What should I bring?
You don’t need to bring much! Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses if it is sunny, a water bottle, and a change of clothes for after the tour are all recommended.
What equipment is provided?
We will provide stand up paddle boards, paddles, leashes, and lifejackets, plus wetsuits and thermal layers if it is cold out. Your guide will have all the appropriate safety equipment for the trip.
How long am I paddling for?
You will be paddling for a total of 2 hours. You will have a break for a drink and a snack along the way to keep up your energy. There will be some transportation and instructional time at the beginning of your trip as well.
Do I need previous experience?
The Lake Escape is a perfect trip for beginners or more experienced stand up paddle boarders! Your guide will spend the time you need to get you feeling comfortable on the board. If you have some experience already, your guide will find a longer or more challenging route for you to try out!
Do I need to be able to swim?
You do not need to be able to swim, but please let your guide know so that they can make sure you are comfortable on the water.
Will I get wet?
It is very likely you will get wet, and possible that you will fall in while paddle boarding, which is all part of the fun!
Where do we go?
The weather/wind will play a big part in dictating exactly where your tour will go, but the plan is to try and go with the wind. This means either starting in town and ending further away (bring picked up by a water-taxi at the end), or taking the water-taxi out at the beginning and then paddling back into town.
Can we have a private tour?
Yes! Please contact us by phone or email for prices or to book a private tour.
What sorts of weather does the trip operate in?
This trip operates rain or shine! If it is windy we know some great spots on the lake we can still happily paddle around in.
Impressed with our guide Joel from Paddle Wanaka who was really interesting and professional. He taught us how to use peddle board as complete beginners. We did a 4 hour peddle tour. Altough it was frogy and windy, the view on Lake Wanaka was still breathtaking taking. A relaxing way to spend the day. Well worth the money.Thank you, Joel :) JANUARY 2020
My husband an I first timers on stand up paddle boarding. We had a wonderful time with our tour guide Tyler he was amazing, accommodating, knowledgeable about the Maori myth and legends and friendly. Loved our experience DECEMBER 2019
Amazing Adventure. Have never done stand up paddle boarding the Guys at Paddle Wanaka, where fabulous and understanding of my skill level. You are met with professionals that treat you like a local. Their lay back professional style is the what you need. The views are breathe taking. The knowledge of the guides on the local area is outstanding and appreciated. After two hours of puddling their pop up coffee shop at the end was only one of the highlights. Would highly recommence them.
Amazing Experience on the Lake. I booked the 1/2 day SUP and had the most amazing afternoon! Bex and Chris were excellent to deal with, despite me being a little indecisive about what I wanted to do. They really care about you having a good experience, their ethos and approach is fabulous, if being on the water in beautiful surroundings is your thing then you have to make the time to paddle Wanaka.
I had fabulous calm weather whilst I was there, Chris was an excellent instructor and guide, I paddle fairly regularly and asked for some tips, enjoyed getting some instruction whilst cruising around such beautiful surroundings. We went a chill pace which mean I could soak up the place and enjoyed hearing about the area and lake. I fell in which i totally recommend! After a few seconds you get over the cold shock and realise you are swimming in the most stunning water.
Really can't recommend Paddle Wanaka enough, it was one of the highlights of an amazing holiday.
One of the Best Afternoons of My Life. We chose the guided SUP package and it was right up there with one of the best experiences I've ever had. The team at Paddle Wanaka were great, the kit was in fantastic condition and the awe inspiring beauty if this part of NZ is best experienced from on the water. Thank you so much for enabling us to see it!
Even though it was technically "winter" there's no reason not to SUP and get into the stunning scenery.
